Polish folk sculptor Marian Murat ( 1955- ) coaxes a colorful, character-filled Polish couple from local linden wood. Detailed, expressive figurines exemplify the native dress of the historic northern Warmian region, a richly diverse area with cultural influences from Germany, Lithuania, Latvia and Prussia. The paired figures, which measure about 9” tall, include a tall, mustachioed man in a blue trench with a yellow fedora, and a smaller female wearing a rather complex ethnic headpiece and a long, burnt orange gown topped by a burnt orange/umber patterned shawl. The pair is thoughtfully composed so that the accents of the man’s hatband and ascot match the woman’s ensemble. The contemporary artist has been sculpting wooden representations of Polish characters for decades. His work is represented in major museums, galleries and collections and has been recognized with many awards. I have attached an article for those interested. The sculptures are in EUC with bright colors and sharp detail. There is color fading on the back of the male figure and a minor crack on the back bottom tier of the woman’s skirt, both shown in the pictures. Sculptures are marked with paper labels on the bottoms. From the estate of a Polish/ Eastern European collector in Los Angeles.
