DESCRIPTION: Offered for your review and consideration is this absolutely exciting and very rare, mid to late 19th century Ame ri can antique wood box advertising shipping crate, produced by the Ame ri can Chemical Manufacturing Company, Rochester, New York, with an 1871 patent. This incredible and quite early example of Ame ri can mercantile advertising, was produced after the conclusion of the US Civil War. It offered black stove polish to the burgeoning Ame ri can middle class, who enjoyed the spoils of the Union victory after the fratricidal war and newfound, often exponential wealth from the bounty provided by the Ame ri can industrial revolution. In many Victorian households, be they patrician or the newly emerging Ame ri can middle-class, a lady of good repute and conscientious caretaker of a proper Victorian household, would need to make sure the often numerous coal and wood burning stoves located throughout a home would be kept tidy and polished to a uniform, blackened finish. This wood box stove black polishing paste advertising shipping crate features a wire hinged lid with a nearly entirely intact, incredible figurative paper label affixed to its interior. A truly splendid, wonderful wood box crate. Absolutely wonderful. CONDITION: Good to Very Good overall antique condition.
