In 1945, towards the end of a war that had once again brought destruction and desolation to Poland, the Detroit Institute of Arts presented an exhibition entitled "Polish Paining, " which, in the words of then Director William R. Valentiner, was conceived with the intention f"furthering our knowledge, understanding, and appreciation of Poland and her rich cultural heritage. " It is my great pleasure to introduce, forty years later, an exhibition that fulfills this intention.
