SCARCE (1929) POLISH RELIGIOUS LYRICAL SONG BOOK, "LIRNIK POLSKI" IN POLISH. This rarely-seen book was printed by St. Hedwig's Printery, an orphanage for Polish and Slovak children near Chicago, IL. After the turn of the century, the Chicago Surface Lines traveled down the middle of Milwaukee Avenue to Niles, bringing immigrants from Chicago. In the 1930s Niles's population of 2,135 included 800 orphans in St. Hedwig's who were taught printmaking, bookmaking, shoemaking, sewing, cooking, and other skills to serve in the hospitality trade. The book is in excellent condition commensurate with age and scarcity. The boards, binding, and leaves are 100% correct. The text is in Polish. The majority of the songs are religious in nature. A really superb artifact illustrating the industriousness of early Polish and Slovak immigrants in America.
