This Amber stone was cut and polished by my father many years ago. The free-formed, seven sided shaped stone is 11 mm by 7 mm by 5 mm . The gemstone weighs 0.518 grams or 2.590 carats . After years of cutting traditional shaped stones my dad got very excited about branching out into unique shapes. I took the photos in LED daylight lighting, and in my light box which has both warm and cool LED lights. The photos all show the same stone. I don't know where the rough material he used to cut it from came from. He didn't keep accurate records of rough material but in the months before his death he sat down with me to take measurements of his cut stones and he told me what he remembered about them. I loved watching him work on them. Each stone took days to cut and polish as compared to the minutes needed to make a cabochon. My father would tell me about inclusions and how that affected the value either positively or negatively but we didn't record information regarding clarity on our measurement notes. With his PhD in Mineralogy, my dad collected many hundreds of rocks and minerals. He often cut and/or faceted some of the gemstones he collected and then made them into simple jewelry, or sold them to jewelers. He told me that he "lets the stone dictate the shape" so that his hand-cut stones truly emphasize the best the stone has to offer. Some of his faceted stones, especially those he did in the last couple of decades were more free-form. A fter seven decades of cutting faceted stones I think he grew tired of the traditional cuts and wanted to try new angles and shapes. Creating such unique shapes puts his work into a different category from the mass cut stones that come from Asia or India. He also told me about his first faceting machine - one that he rigged together in the 1950s. Later, he purchased a faceting machine that he used for over 50 years. In addition to cutting stones he loved to teach others to do so. (I learned cabochon work from him but refused to try to master the math required in faceting stones, much to his disappointment. Luckily he had more interested learners to teach over the years!) He cut stones as a hobby up until his death in 2022 at the age of 92! I have many of his rock/mineral items and other treasures up for sale! Please check out my other items by going to the Visit Store link. I have set it up to combine shipping if you purchase more than one item on the same day.* You can also ask for an invoice before you pay to find the actual shipping cost, especially if you buy very light items as they may actually weigh less than the one ounce recorded (that's the lowest weight I can list.) After I combine shipping I do refund you if the system makes you pay for each item's shipping cost up front, but only if the items were purchased on the same day.
Returns Accepted for this item if it's within 30 Days
